Questions people ask us first
Do we have to be a certain kind of couple to come?
No. You don't need to be married, living together, monogamous or the same kind of queer. You can be two people or more, new or long together, or unsure what to call it. We start with how you describe it.
Do you take my insurance?
We are out of network with every insurance plan, and we do not bill Medicare or Medicaid. Some plans reimburse part of an out-of-network session, and we give you a monthly receipt to claim it. Couples work is often not reimbursed, because many plans pay only when one person has a diagnosis.
What is a superbill, and can I use it?
A superbill is an itemized receipt, with the dates, the fee and the codes, that you can send to a plan that reimburses out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code that your insurer will see, so we go through it with you before you decide to use it. Reimbursement is not guaranteed.
What is a good faith estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what care will cost before you begin. It is not a contract. If a bill comes in $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. We send the estimate before your first session.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
Each session's fee is given to you in writing before you start. Either of you can pay, or you can split it. We hold a limited number of reduced-fee spots, and you can ask about one without explaining why.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
In most cases, yes. HSA and FSA cards usually work for therapy sessions. Your plan administrator can confirm, and we can give you a receipt for your records.
What happens in the first session?
It runs 80 minutes. We hear each of you describe the relationship in your own words, ask what you hope will be different, and agree on what we are working on and what stays private. Nothing is decided for you.
How often and how long are sessions?
Sessions run 80 minutes. Many people meet weekly at first, then less often. Your clinician sets the pace with you, and we never promise a number of sessions.
Are you licensed where I live?
Both clinicians are licensed in North Carolina. We see people in our Chapel Hill office, and by video when you are in North Carolina at the time of the session. If you will be in another state, we can't see you by video.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988 at any time, or call 911 in an emergency. This website and our phones are not monitored around the clock, so please don't wait for us to answer.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you tell your clinician is confidential, with limits the law sets: a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, and a report the law requires. In couples work we also agree early on how we handle something one of you tells us alone.
Do you see teens or children?
No. We see adults, 18 and older. The Crisis and resources page lists places to start if you are looking for help for a young person.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give us 24 hours' notice to change or cancel a session. A later cancellation may be charged at the session fee, which you will have seen in writing. If something urgent comes up, call us and we will talk it through.
Do we all have to come every time?
Not necessarily. With three or more people, we agree at the start who comes to which sessions, and we revisit it as things change. We also agree how we handle time with one person alone.
Still have a question?
Write to us and ask it however it comes out.
